When trying to listen to it, he is transported to the Illusionary SEKAI, where he stumbles upon the employee of a bookstore he often frequents. #backstory
Contrary to what his cheery demeanor might lead others to believe, Haruka was once the polar opposite of what he is today. An introverted and attentive boy born as the middle child out of four, Haruka was always immensely attached to his family—an almost picture-perfect household, tight-knit and supportive of each other. His father, especially, was his personal hero: working as a firefighter, he regaled young Haruka with stories of helping others, admiration burning bright in his eyes. Not a day would pass without Haruka glued to him, telling him how he would be exactly like him when he'd grow up, working to save others.Which made his father's death, killed in action during a house fire, all the more painful. The loss drastically changed his personality, driving him from curious, albeit reserved, to aloof and bitter. Entering middle school, he slowly grew distant from everyone, pushing away most of those who would try to approach him, and gaining a slight rebellious streak, to work out his still conflicted emotions. His own family struggled to support him through these troubled times, with his mother and older brother being too busy trying to keep the family afloat, unknowingly pushing him deeper into loneliness. It all changed when one day, someone managed to break past his barriers.Aki Amamiya was, from what he heard, the resident troublemaker at his school. Most students were afraid of him, intimidated by the numerous bruises on his skin and the permanent scowl on his face. So when Haruka ended up paired with him in class for a group project, as both had no friends to partner with, he didn’t quite know what to expect; but he soon realized that Aki was nothing like what the rumors said. A bit standoffish, yes - but he wasn’t as hostile and dangerous as others made him be. As they kept working and chatting together, something within them began to light up, and they realized that they had a lot more in common than they thought. From their shared love for music, to the budding feeling of freedom both of them yearned for—discovering little by little parts of each other’s hearts that they kept locked up for so long.Aki’s steadfast attitude and open-mindedness gave Haruka the strength to gradually open up again, inspiring him to have faith in himself as well as the things he loved; even encouraging him to mend his relationship with his family, and pick up music seriously after hearing him sing. He was like the stars to him; a positive presence like none other, and with each passing day the young Kannazuki grew more confident, and began to smile in ways he hadn’t since so long…to feel things he had never felt for anyone else before.During their first year of high school, spurred on by his words, Haruka began to perform in the streets of the city, guitar in hand, pouring his heart out to an audience that always included his companion. Aki was ever there, cheering him on, pride gleaming in his eyes every time he sang. And yet, sometimes, as their gazes crossed, he could discern something…unusual, coming from him. A hint of something hollow, that Aki would always brush away with a smile, claiming it was just tiredness. Those little oddities would keep on piling up, like the increasing bruises on his skin from the fights he kept getting into, like the amount of times they would skip school to hang out at the abandoned shrine that became their hideout the day Aki gifted him his most treasured possession—a pair of matching handmade fox masks, to celebrate the anniversary of their first meeting.Their routine settled in; and soon enough, their last year of high school rolled in.With midterms over, things were lightening up a little before summer break. Haruka had begun to work seriously on his first original song, finally managing to fill the blank space haunting the career survey they had distributed at school. Something that Aki, however, did not manage to do. They would discuss it on their way home, Haruka attempting to cheer him on - yet he would remain as elusive as ever. They’d part ways that evening, with Haruka promising to help figure out their future together, Aki’s jacket on his shoulders to protect him from the chilly breeze.Aki would be absent from school the following day. The teachers would chalk it up to him being sick, and that he’d probably be showing up again soon. Yet, days, then weeks passed, with still no sign of him returning—leading to rumors soon cropping up. He dropped out, they’d say. He joined a gang, they’d say. He is—Those rumors were all cut short by Haruka, who would from then on get into fights to protect his reputation. His memory, some would say, but he’d never admit it. He’d never accept it—and this, despite the scolding from his teachers and his mother, who found herself unable to support him in his hour of need. He knew she understood his plight: more than anyone else, she knew how hard it was to deal with the disappearance of someone you loved dearly, but he was still aching too much to hear anything. He would, however, find some comfort in playing guitar in the streets, singing his pain out, hoping that maybe, just maybe, Aki would hear him.Years passed, and eventually, the pain dulled. It never truly went away, but he was able to at least get back up, and with the help of his older brother, mend his relationship with his mother. He would also start a music major, hoping that perfecting his craft and starting a proper career would maybe send a sign to the one he loved, wherever he was.(Still deaf and blind to the possibility of him being gone forever.)One day, he kicks up a conversation with a young man, an employee at the local bookstore. And in his eyes, he seems to discern the hint of something hollow…

A serious individual working as a simple clerk in a small bookshop. Valued by his colleagues and employers because of his diligent nature, he however never mingles with his peers. He used to pursue literary studies, but dropped out of college due to seemingly medical reasons - something others have never managed to get him to talk about. One evening, after an unusually exhausting day at work involving a very curious client, he finds a strange file called "Untitled" on his computer. Dismissing it as an old file he forgot to delete, he clicks it—and soon finds himself transported to a different world, only to meet with a weirdly familiar face...

#backstory
Born as the only son of a young couple, Kou's relationship with his family has never been the best. With his parents being busy with work, leaving him to only spend time with them in the evenings, and his only other relatives—his grandparents—living in a small countryside village close to the sea, he quickly learned to make of books and stories his most dependable companions.Regardless of their absence, he always tried his best to make his parents happy, but while his mother often boasted to her friends about how talented and mature her son was, his father only met him with evasive replies and stern looks. He never got more than a vague nod in his direction, and little by little, a feeling of unease took hold in his heart, though he could never understand why exactly.
Eventually, it all came to a head the day young Kou overheard his parents arguing, well after his curfew - with his father saying that his son was never truly wanted, and accusing his wife of trapping him with a child when all he wanted was a quiet life with a woman. The argument led to their inevitable divorce, and mother and son left the following day, denying Kou any true closure. To allow him to heal from the turmoil, his mother sent him to live with his grandparents for a few years, with a tutor hired to pursue his education, as there was no school in the little seaside village. As years passed, he seemingly managed to recover, returning to the city to resume his studies - but as the adults surrounding him never sought to actively help him out, his wounds never truly mended. Unconsciously, he became an overachiever: compensating for the guilt caused by his father’s words, and convincing himself that if he was good enough in everyone's eyes, no one would ever leave again. This mindset firmly engraved in him as he entered high school, he immediately became top of his class, though this came at the cost of him never making any friends due to being so focused on studying. His lack of social skills and aloof nature attracted some bullies, as well—but he never paid it any mind, telling himself that as long as he was successful, the pain he went through did not matter. He graduated with honors, soon entering college, still as alone as before. From then on, something changed.Somehow, things felt emptier than before. His previous motivation to succeed at all costs faded, leaving only exhaustion behind. He grew unable to see the point in anything anymore, and his attendance dropped. Soon, he would never show up in class again - let alone come out of his apartment, where he lived on his own since the tail end of his high school years. He spent a year and a half as a shut-in, until things in his head eventually became too much.So he thought—Buying a train ticket to his grandparents' village, he found himself alone in the little creek where he used to play as a child.
A rope in his hand, his shoes on the seashore. The rope around his neck, then tied to the branch of a nearby tree. The sea as far as the eye can see. Then...He woke up collapsed on the sand, a broken branch near him.
He remained silent for a while, contemplating his surroundings. Hastily picked up his shoes, then hurried back to the train station. Returned home.Bottling up everything—the shame from his failure at ending it all, alongside his doubts, scars, and his feelings of emptiness—he chose to force himself to face the world again. Thinking that if he were to act like a "proper member of society" people wouldn't abandon him again, he picked up a small job as a clerk in a bookshop, hoping to make himself useful. To his eyes, it is more than enough. He's doing what he is asked of, is paid for it, and quietly returns home in the evening, only to start over again the following day. He does not need more, he tells himself; keeping on averting his eyes from the scars he locked away on the other side of his heart. But one day, during his shift, an unknown voice calls out to him—

A facet of the Virtual Singer "v flower".She is the one whom Haruka met when he first entered the SEKAI, and who subsequently brought him at the shrine at the top of the hill to meet the others. While Haruka thinks of her as a sometimes unruly younger sibling, Kou has much more trouble dealing with her, often instantly disengaging when she attempts to bother him.

She is, in a way, the embodiment of all the feelings Kou repressed since his youth. As he forced himself to act more mature than his age, in order to fulfill the expectations of people around him, all of his innocence was cast aside and buried deep inside of his heart. Those feelings, and all his suppressed frustration, in turn gave birth to Flower.
Her very existence is a message; his own heart wishing to convey that he is allowed to breathe and let himself live as he wishes, unburdened by what others expect of him. But it appears that Kou himself does not seem ready to accept this...

Despite his feelings (or maybe because of them) Haruka's perception of Aki was somewhat idealized. Though he thought he knew him better than anyone, Aki and his true feelings remain a riddle to him, one that he has never been able to solve—and he still blames himself for it, thinking that if he was able to understand him more, he would still be by his side.
IA embodies to some extent this cryptic perception of him, and she is very much aware of it: doing as a result her best to gently nudge Haruka in a direction where he would be able to uncover the truth behind Aki's disappearance and come to terms with his fate. Yet, Haruka himself doesn't seem to be eager to do so...
